Visit La Roque Saint-Christophe during the off-season: an adventure in the heart of the Vézère Valley

In the heart of the Vézère Valley, within the famous “Valley of Man,” La Roque Saint-Christophe is a troglodytic site unlike any other in the world. Located in the Dordogne, between Les Eyzies and Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère, it bears witness to human ingenuity from prehistoric times through the Middle Ages.
Even during the off-season, the cliff is open to visitors: no reservation required, no waiting, and reduced admission starting November 12. It’s an experience to enjoy as a couple, with friends, or on a family outing—a nature and history walk near the Lascaux Caves and sheltered from the rain.

A self-guided tour through the heart of an exceptional troglodytic site

A self-guided tour of La Roque Saint-Christophe is an immersive experience in a place where history and nature come together. Stretching over a kilometer, this inhabited cliff rises 40 meters above the Vézère Valley and features a seriesof rock shelters, panoramic terraces, medieval hoisting mechanisms, and reconstructions of troglodyte dwellings.
You’ll walk along Europe’s longest aerial terrace, suspended above the valley—the Grande Terrasse, also known as the Boulevard de l’Humanité. From there, the view of the Vézère Valley and the Périgord is spectacular, especially during fall or winter visits, when the light highlights the surrounding landscape.

This historical and cultural tour is the perfect way to explore the Dordogne from a different perspective, away from the summer crowds.

An immersive journey through living heritage, scale models, and 3D film

Even without a guide, La Roque Saint-Christophe offers a fascinating tour thanks to its comprehensive museum exhibits, which are accessible to everyone.
A map available at the reception desk guides you along the cliff, featuring informative panels. You’ll discover two giant models illustrating cave-dwelling life during different eras, as well as a 3D film detailing the site’s geological formation, its human occupation, and life in the medieval cave settlement when it was home to nearly 300 families.

On the weekend, children can follow in the footsteps of Théobald the Falcon, the site’s mascot, through a free puzzle game: a fun and educational tour that’s perfect for families. It’s a unique way to explore the heritage of the Vézère Valley while having fun.

A pleasure to share any time of year

You can visit La Roque Saint-Christophe on your own, without a reservation, and at your own pace. You can buy your tickets online or on-site, with no time constraints or lines.
And because it’s largely sheltered from the rain, the cliff remains an excellent activity in the Dordogne during fall or winter —offering a blend of nature, culture, and history.
The on-site shop is also worth a visit: you’ll find artisanal products from the Périgord, local specialties, books, minerals, as well as games and stuffed animals for children—everything you need to bring home an authentic souvenir from your visit to the Périgord.
