What to Do with Your Family This Christmas in the Dordogne? Discover the life-size nativity scene and Christmas festivities in La Roque-Saint-Christophe

Spending Christmas with the family in the Dordogne is always a special time, and the Vézère Valley is particularly well-suited for magical outings during the winter break. If you’re looking for a unique, authentic, and immersive activity to enjoy with the kids, don’t miss the life-size nativity scene at La Roque Saint-Christophe, set right in the heart of the troglodytic cliff (December 1 through January 4).

Every year, our site gets a makeover and offers visitors a warm, family-friendly experience—perfect for getting ready for the holidays or enjoying an outing during the Christmas break.

A life-size nativity scene at a cave settlement that is unique in Europe

Set in one of our rock-cut shelters—a former sheepfold (the perfect spot)—our life-size nativity scene comes to life amid a historic setting dating back a thousand years. Created in 2024 by Carina Tornatoris (a visual artist from Normandy), it is made of natural materials (straw, hay, clay). Each figure is life-size and set within the natural crevices of the rock, creating a gentle, luminous atmosphere that enchants visitors of all ages. At the foot of this Nativity scene, you’ll find an interpretive panel explaining the origins of nativity scenes, prepared by the La Roque team and, in particular, Vanessa, our historian-guide.

This event, which has become a must-see during the holiday season in the Vézère Valley, offers:

  • to discover an exceptional natural and historical heritage,
  • to enjoy a family outing that’s accessible to everyone,
  • to immerse yourself in a unique Christmas atmosphere that blends tradition and history.

Whether you’re in the Dordogne during the Christmas holidays, for the weekend, or on a spontaneous outing, this cave nativity scene is one of the must-see family activities.
